Primary School Stormwater Environmentally Controlled by Hydro
Stormwater discharge restrictions imposed on a greenfield site for the new Cradley Primary School, in the rolling Herefordshire border country outside Malvern, meant an extensive flow control system was required.  Hydro International’s modular Stormcell® storage medium with a Hydro-Brake® Flow Control enabled engineers Shire Consulting to achieve the discharge limits with minimal disturbance to the school environment, and at a competitive total installed cost. Richard Hartshorne, Project Engineer for Shire Consulting explained: ” We wanted to install a low-maintenance storage solution without traffic damage to the school site, which has been created from agricultural land.  By using Stormcell®, which does not require extensive construction work, we were able to reinstate the land over the storage as an ‘outdoor study’ area, for planting and natural history investigation.” The planners had determined that runoff from the school building and car park was to be limited to 6 l/s, requiring 113 cu.m. of storage and a 49 mm SHX type Hydro-Brake® Flow Control.  The site has a fall of at least 5 metres across it, so the storage solution was located at the lower end, below the school buildings and the playing field, which had been cut and levelled at the upper end.  

To ensure that the school grounds could be returned to a ‘natural’ appearance as soon as possible, Shire Consulting tried to limit heavy construction traffic wherever possible, and the requirements for Stormcell® made this much simpler.  The Hydro-Brake® Flow Control could be installed at the bottom of the site in a small chamber with little additional work.

With a high load bearing honeycomb structure, a key benefit of Stormcell® is its loading capacity of up to 40 tonnes/m2, which allows it to be installed under trafficked areas and with high depths of cover without the need for expensive additional structural support.   Additionally, Stormcell®’s unique patented silt protection design ensures that maintenance of the storage system is minimised and access for inspection is permitted.  Solutions without silt protection may require expensive cleaning or even complete replacement within only a few years in order to maintain the storage volume and effectiveness of the facility. If you would like any further information on the Hydro Stormcell®, Hydro-Brake® or any of Hydro’s other storm and wastewater management systems, please call 0800 269371.
