Hydro Grit King® Protects Tavistock Works From Grit And Sand
As part of the programme to improve the UK’s water quality to the Environment Agency’s standards, South West Water Services Ltd have invested in a major upgrade to its wastewater treatment works on the outskirts of Tavistock, in the Tavy river valley. To provide additional protection for the inlet works from grit and sand carried in inflowing primary sewage, South West Water have installed Hydro’s Grit King® Separator and Hydro Grit-Cleanse™ Classifier.

The 2.3 metre diameter Hydro Grit King® Separator has been installed as a stand-alone unit in 304 grade stainless steel with a peak flow rate of 140 l/s. The Grit King® Separator will remove 95% of grits down to 200 microns at peak design flow.  The solids are discharged to a Hydro Grit-Cleanse™ Classifier, also in 304 stainless steel, which provides washed grits with less than 5% faecal organic material, suitable for disposal/use elsewhere. Mr Derek Spratt, Site Operator, South West Water Services Ltd, commented: “The Grit King® Separator design is very effective in protecting the treatment works, and is extremely easy to operate. It has not required maintenance in the two years since it has been installed.” The Hydro Grit-King® uses vortex technology to allow grit and sand particles to settle out by gravity into the grit pot over a very wide range of flow rates, traps floatables and enables the overflow to be discharged to the treatment works. The Separator requires minimal maintenance and has no power requirements or moving parts.  The grit and sand is fluidised by backwash, before being passed to the Hydro Grit?Cleanse™ Classifier.  Here it is washed by water spray and transported up an inclined trough by Archimedean screw to be finally discharged into containers.  Main contractor on the Tavistock WWTW site was Purac Ltd, and installation of the Hydro units were by Krisco Fabrications Ltd, General Panel Systems and Inglecray. If you would like any further information on the Grit King® Separator, Grit-Cleanse™ or any of Hydro’s other storm and wastewater management systems, please call 0800 269371.
