Hydro Grit King® Process Protects Falkirk Works From Grit And Sand
kinneil_kerse.jpgAs part of the programme to improve facilities at the Kinneil Kerse Waste Water Treatment Works, Falkirk, Scottish Water have invested in twin Hydro’s Grit King® Separators, supported by a Hydro Grit-Cleanse™ Classifier. This equipment provides additional protection for the inlet works and treatment process from grit and sand carried within the flow.  The 5.2 metre diameter Hydro Grit King® Separators have been installed as stand-alone units in 316 grade stainless steel, and have peak flow rates of 889 l/s each. They are designed to remove at least 95% of grits down to 200 microns at peak flow.  The solids are discharged to a Hydro Grit-Cleanse™ Classifier, in 316 stainless steel, which provides washed grits with less than 5% faecal organic material, suitable for disposal/use elsewhere. Mr John Wallace, Kinneil Kerse Site Manager of Scottish Water Services Ltd, commented: “The Hydro Grit King® design is very effective in protecting the treatment works, and is extremely easy to operate. No maintenance has been required since installation in 2002, and the quality and cleanliness of the grit is excellent.” The Hydro Grit-King® uses vortex technology to allow grit and sand particles to settle out by gravity into the grit pot over a very wide range of flow rates, traps floatables and enables the overflow to be discharged to the treatment works. The separator requires minimal maintenance and has no power requirements or moving parts. The grit and sand is fluidised by backwash, before being passed to the Hydro Grit Cleanse™.  Here it is washed by water spray and transported via an inclined trough by Archimedean screw to be finally discharged into containers.  Main contractor on the Kinneil Kerse WWTW site was Henry Boot Scotland Ltd, and installation of the Hydro units was by Black & Veatch Contracting Ltd. If you would like any further information on the Grit King® Separator, Grit-Cleanse™ or any of Hydro’s other storm and wastewater management systems, please call 0800 269371.
