Hydro Stormbloc Lowers Soakaway Costs
For the 800 sq.m. car park for a private apartments development at Ramsden Heath, Billericay, proposals for the rain and stormwater drainage had originally consisted of a number of large diameter, traditional deep manhole soakaways. Contractor Wilson Construction saved between an estimated 10-15% on installation costs by suggesting the use of Hydro’s new Stormbloc™ Stormwater Infiltration System. Ian Jordan, Project Manager for Wilson Construction commented: “The original plans for handling the water runoff from the car park and other areas had included five 2.1 metre diameter ‘manhole’ soakaways. Three were 3 metres in depth, with 2 metres below the incoming pipe invert level, and 2 were 2 metres – 1 metre below pipe invert.” billericay_2.jpg“This would have involved a lot of work digging deep into the Essex clay, which will allow water to infiltrate it but is hard to excavate. As we had used Hydro’s Stormcell® storage medium before, we were confident that the Stormbloc™ would be equally successful.” “About 28 cu.m. of the Stormbloc™ modules were installed in two areas. As these are only 660mm deep, and laid over 100mm of gravel (and a geotextile membrane), excavation was greatly reduced compared to the previous proposals. Stormbloc™ is fully loadbearing, so it could be placed under the car park areas. As well as saving on the installation time and costs, the inspection/jetting tunnels will simplify any maintenance required in the future.” The new Stormbloc™ rain and stormwater infiltration medium from Hydro International has been introduced to complement the well-known Stormcell® Stormwater Storage System.   Stormbloc™ is a cost-effective modular infiltration block system, with a designed-in and patented access tunnel for easy maintenance.  Stormbloc™ is thus ideal for infiltration schemes and SuDS projects offering the easy handling and installation benefits of a modular system. Stormbloc™ is available in eco-green polypropylene 800 X 800 X 663 mm blocks providing high volume water storage with a 96% void ratio. The system is designed so that, when installed, a 222 X 570 mm cross-section access tunnel runs through the blocks. This can be accessed easily by a CCTV or a high pressure jetting hose inserted to shift any accumulated sediment, silt or debris in the system, should the need arise – a feature which sets it apart from its competitors. If you would like any further information on the Stormbloc™ or any of Hydro’s other storm and wastewater management systems, please call 0800 269371.
