Strategic Plan
Hydro International aims to deliver profitable, sustainable growth by pursuing its long term strategic plan and business objectives.

Core Products in Core Markets

Hydro International's core activities are to provide products for Stormwater and Wastewater management, with the UK and the US being the largest markets served, each with very different regulatory and market drivers.

Stormwater in the UK and the US
Hydro International's UK Stormwater business focuses on flow control and storage media and is driven by local planning requirements and environmental regulations around new build construction and flood control.

In the US, Hydro's Stormwater business concentrates on Stormwater treatment technologies. This market is driven by the Federal National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) regulations that are designed to address pollutants associated with urban Stormwater runoff.

For more on Hydro International's core markets, visit the Markets page.

Development of core markets
Hydro International is focused on maximising its competitive position and targeting sectors of the market that offer growth opportunities. As the UK moves forward with the implementation of the EU Water Framework Directive, Hydro expects to see developing markets in the UK and Europe for Stormwater treatment products of the type supplied to the US market.

In the US, Hydro International aims to grow Stormwater market share by continuing to develop new routes to market and achieving regulatory approvals in key territories.

Hydro International's US and UK Wastewater businesses are supported by the growing public awareness of the importance of clean water and the growing need to fix ageing and outdated plants and crumbling infrastructure.

International Business Development

Hydro International's International Business Development applies core market products, expertise and solutions to developing international territories.

Prior to entering a new overseas market, we consider key market drivers defined by the following evaluation criteria:

  • Existing environmental regulations
  • New environmental regulations being considered
  • Enforcement of environmental regulations at the national, state and local level
  • Funding mechanisms for public and private projects in the water sector
  • Barriers to entry

Hydro's International Business Development activity currently focuses on building business by expanding the company's network of international distributors and licensees.

New Product Development

New products are developed by Hydro International's Innovation Team, consisting of research and development, product development and supporting internal systems functions.  Hydro's Innovation Team uses the company's two world-class full scale hydraulic test facilities located at Clevedon (UK) and Portland, Maine (US) to test the performance of products in development.

Hydro develops strategic partnerships and collaborations with third parties to supplement the Innovation Team’s skills and provide independent verification and validation for new and existing products. Hydro collaborates with world-renowned universities and institutions on a wide range of projects. For more, visit the Collaborations page.

Business or Technology Acquisition

Hydro International supplements organic revenue and earnings growth from core businesses by making appropriate business or technology acquisitions. Hydro International maintains a list of potential target companies operating within key market sectors that would supplement the company's business model. Building important relationships and maintaining a dialogue with good quality companies is an important part of Hydro International's acquisition strategy.

Hydro International's acquisition criteria state that a potential acquisition must:

  • Allow for product diversification within Hydro's sphere of experience
  • Remove a competitor or a potential competitor from the market
  • Enhance shareholder value
  • Allow Hydro International to expand its operations into new geographical territories
  • Bring in new technology with Intellectual Property
  • Have strong brand identity and a solid reputation in the marketplace
  • Show good growth potential

Other considerations for an acquisition target are:

  • How the target's products complement and/or expand Hydro International's product portfolio
  • How Hydro International could benefit from the target's existing routes to market
  • Whether Hydro International believes its competitors to be interested in the target, and if so, what the potential risks would be should a competitor acquire it
