Marietta, Georgia Approves Use of Hydro International’s Stormwater Treatment Products

Certification Opens Up New Market for Hydro’s Up-Flo Filter, Downstream Defender

 Hydro International, a leading provider of environmentally sustainable products and innovative solutions that control and treat stormwater, wastewater and combined sewer overflow, today announced that the city of Marietta, Ga., has approved the use of the Hydro Up-Flo® Filter and the Hydro Downstream Defender® for stormwater treatment projects.

The Marietta Public Works Department added the products to its list of approved Water Quality Proprietary Units based on a series of exhaustive performance tests by the New Jersey Corporation for Advanced Technology (NJCAT) and the USEPA Environmental Technology Verification programs. Marietta officials reviewed the NJCAT’s testing standards -- considered to be among the most stringent in the nation -- and adopted the certifications for their municipality. For the Up-Flo Filter, the city has sanctioned a certified peak inflow rate of 0.045 cfs per filter module and a maximum impervious area of 0.3 acres per filter module.The approval marks the first time a Hydro International product has been officially certified for general use by a major government agency in the state of Georgia. In the past, Up-Flo Filters and Downstream Defenders have been deployed in the state on case-by-case approvals. “This approval displays a resounding vote of confidence in Hydro International products,” said Larry Abatiell, National Sales Manager of Hydro International’s U.S. Stormwater business. “We look forward to helping the city of Marietta, and we believe other communities will see the value in our products’ performance, cost-effectiveness and reliability.”The Up-Flo Filter is a high-rate stormwater filtration technology that removes trash, sediments, nutrients, metals and hydrocarbons from stormwater runoff. As the industry’s only fluidized bed upflow filtration technology, the Up-Flo Filter provides a higher level of treatment, a higher rate of filtration, and a longer maintenance cycle than other filter systems. The Downstream Defender is an advanced hydrodynamic separator designed to remove sediment, floatables and associated pollutants from stormwater. With the use of advanced vortex technology, the Downstream Defender has proven to be more efficient than other structural treatment devices in as little as half the footprint and is the only separator with internal components proven to prevent pollutant washout. The Up-Flo Filter and the Downstream Defender are complementary technologies in that the Up-Flo Filter targets silt-sized particles as well as oils and floatables, while the Downstream Defender removes oils, floatables and sand-sized particles.  The city of Marietta’s approval follows the Up-Flo Filter’s Pilot Use Level Designation in early 2008 by the Washington Department of Ecology, also known for its rigorous performance verification standards. Government and private groups in many states, including Georgia, consider NJCAT’s stamp of approval a critically important credential when determining which equipment to use for stormwater management projects. NJCAT works closely with The Technology Acceptance and Reciprocity Partnership (TARP), formed by eight states to evaluate and share scientific data on technology performance of environmental protection solutions. By sharing data and standardizing testing methods, TARP aims to help agencies streamline approval processes and contractors make informed purchasing decisions. TARP member states are California, Massachusetts, Illinois, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New Jersey.  Other regions such as the metropolitan areas of Atlanta and Nashville also look to TARP guidelines for guidance on new stormwater management technologies.
